West Virginia - The Charleston Gazette    Obituary - Gretchen Singleton

Gretchen Singleton, 66, of Newbury, Ohio, passed away on December 21, 2009, after a brief illness.

Born February 9, 1943, Gretchen was the loving daughter of Marjorie Garlow Singleton of Morgantown and the late Julius Singleton Jr. of Morgantown, formerly of Charleston.  She was a graduate of Morgantown High, earned degrees from Stephens College in Missouri and West Virginia University, and received her master's degree from Smith College in Massachusetts.

Gretchen's love for animals, especially horses, and her capacity to nurture and inspire those who shared her interest, shaped a professional career as a teacher and equestrienne that lasted more than four decades.   Early in her career, she served as director of the Riding Program at Camp Robin Hood in Chambersburg, Pa. She also trained and worked at the Cheff Foundation in Augusta, MI, which pioneered in the development of programs designed to teach riding to children with disabilities. Later she helped to found the Pegasus Foundation, dedicated to the same purpose, in Cleveland, Ohio.

For many years, Gretchen was a professor and director of the Equestrian Studies Program at Lake Erie College in Cleveland. During this time, she was selected by the U.S. Equestrian team as part of its volunteer staff for the 1984 Summer Olympics. She also served as director of the Riding Program at Foxcroft School in Fairfax, Va.  For the past 18 years, Gretchen worked full-time as professional equestrienne in the field of dressage. During this time, she taught, trained, and showed horses extensively at both the Prix St. Georges and Grand Prix levels in Ohio, Virginia and Florida.

Gretchen has been cherished throughout her life by students and beloved friends in the horse world, and by Laura, Sarah and Rebecca, to whom she was a loving and devoted sister. Gretchen was the great-granddaughter of the late Theodore and Alice Warrick, the late Aaron and Rebecca Garlow of Morgantown, the late George and Etta Singleton and Terrence and Mary Cox of Charleston. She was the granddaughter of the late Gretchen and Gaie Garlow of Morgantown and the late Mary and Julius Singleton of Charleston.

A family graveside service was held at East Oak Grove Cemetery with the Rev. James R. Riggs officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center, 8450 N. 43rd St., Augusta, MI 49012. www.cheffcenter.org Send condolences online at www.hastingsfuneralhome.com.

Dear Members of the Lake Erie College Community:
Gretchen Singleton, one of the first faculty members for the equestrian program has passed away.  She was hired by Laddie Andahazy in the 1970s and taught Equine activities, Equitation, Hunters, Dressage and Methods and Materials of Teaching. She was a strong advocate for students, an active fox hunter and a  residence director on campus.
